We're highly dependent on technology in day to day life that it is forming a severe addiction, which is very bad and addictive to us. It is not disruptive in a way we think it is, it has changed our lives in a bad way, bad effects on humanity. Smartphones are making people dumb and people are not even realizing it.
For two decades, the advancement in Science and Technology heightened to a greater extent. The 20th-century generation’s popular technology inventions were Personal Computers. The technology inventions in this century include touch screens, social networking sites, Internet of Things(IoT), Artificial intelligence and still expanding. We are moving towards the goal of sending our people to Mars for colonization.
“The difference between technology and slavery is that slaves are fully aware that they are not free” ― Nassim Nicholas Taleb
Similarly, the dependence on technology has increased. Today, we cannot imagine a day without the help of technology. The day starts by checking our daily schedules with Siri and ends by setting alarm for the next day. Slowly, the technology got intruded into our daily activities, from calculating simple calculations using a calculator to reading E-books instead of hardcover books. The normal things we use every day, changed from picture tube TV sets to LED displays, from manual cars and other electronic gadgets to automatic ones.
Yes, technology is needed to reduce our burden in many fields like medicine, architecture, space, etc. In the medical field, digitalization of health records replaced the traditional paper records which are more sustainable. Many mobile applications are used for managing medications, mental health management, apps for fitness and weight loss and diagnostics. Similarly, technology in the architectural sector is also an applaudable one. With the help of Virtual Reality(VR) and Augmented Reality(AR), plans and onsite measurements are done easily. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles(UAV) and analysis of data are used on complex projects. The technologies used for space expeditions are taking us to greater levels.NASA has recently sent the Parker solar probe, man's first attempt to research and monitor the activities of the sun.
Technology became part of a human being. We cannot think even a few minutes without smartphones. These smartphones made us use technology in most of the situations. Have you got lost in a place which you are not aware? No issues, turn on GPS and you can locate where you are on the earth. Getting bored? Log onto social networking sites like YouTube. It is ridiculous that YouTube has now included an option called REMIND ME TO TAKE A BREAK. Once signed in, we really do not know when to stop. One can have more than a thousand friends on Facebook, but the question is, what about in reality?
It is hard to get the fact that the kids of today’s generation do not know what boredom really is. Because they spend their time on Virtual Reality games and simulation games. These technologies are the main causes of many issues like mental illnesses, obesity and they grew up as an antisocial being. When was the last time you actually called a person over the phone and hear their voice? Because it takes a few minutes to dial, which made us prefer texting to talk. Before inventing mobile phones, we remembered a minimum fifty contacts. But today, we do not even make a try to remember things.
"I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction. The world will have a generation of idiots". ~Albert Einstein
Everything is smart these days, smartphones, smart cars, smart kitchens, smart cities and the list goes on, that got indulged into our lives. The Internet of Things (IoT) technology can perform with other connected devices by exchange of data. Many household chores are done with the help of technology, now with IoT, we can operate electronic appliances, from the place of our work. The technology future of our planet is in the hands of IoT and Artificial Intelligence(AI).
Though the advantages of technology are still counting, there is a question arising in our brain, are we too dependent on technology? Yes, in fact, the thought really haunts us. What would happen if we do not have any of these technologies? We cannot completely avoid them, but we can limit their use, without getting addicted. We can do the work, that can be done by us. If the destination to reach is nearer, prefer walking. Tell our kids that outdoor games are fun. Without straining our eyes in digital books, prefer smelling the paper of the book and read.
"Technology is a useful servant but a dangerous master.” ~Christian Lous Lange, a Norwegian politician
Let us not obey every time the phone beeps.
We can bring the change we needed. Together we can.
